Majors: 4/14/03 Carman 10, Baker Print 1 In a game that was actually much closer than the final score indicates, Carman bested Baker Print 10-1, in a 6 inning tilt. Eric Papamarcos started for Baker. Despite running full counts on all 4 Carman batters in the top of the first, he shut down the Carman lineup, registering 3 strikeouts, with only one batter reaching base. Mike Still pitched for Carman, taking the mound in the bottom of the first. Still started slowly, walking the first two batters. A single by Anthony Ricco loaded the bases, with none out. Eric Papamarcos then got an RBI on a 4-3 fielder’s choice, and the score was 1-0, Bakers. Still got out of the inning with only 1 run scored, by K-ing the next 2 batters, as Bakers stranded 2. Carman got on the scoreboard in the top of the second, as Andrew Snow doubled, Jerry Boyer singled, and two subsequent walks forced in a run. Papamarcos escaped a bases loaded jam by getting the 3rd out of the inning on a “backwards K”. Still settled down in the bottom of the second, facing just 3 batters, getting 2 ground balls to second, and a K. Carman added another run in the top of the third, as Papamarcos continued to pitch well. Troy Clifton doubled, and then scored on an RBI single by Jerry Boyer. The “Play of the Game” occurred in the bottom of the 3rd, as Anthony Ricco appeared to get his second hit in as many at bats, on a liner to deep left field. As Ricco rounded first and dug for second, Jerry Boyer scooped up the ball in left, turned and fired over the relayman’s head, directly to second base, where Marc McGough, Carman’s starting secondbaseman, was waiting to apply a picture-perfect tag on the sliding Ricco, to end the inning. In the top of the 4th, Carman broke through at the plate, as Marc McGough reached first, advanced to second on an error, and was brought home by Mike Still’s full-count double to the fence. Then Matt Snow hit MLL’s first “dinger” of the season, as the lefty pushed a high, outside fastball to the opposite field, clearing the left field fence with ease, making the score 5-1. To his credit, Papamarcos again dug down deep, and had what it took to get out of the inning without any more damage, adding two more K’s to his total for the night. Jeremiah Green relieved Papamarcos to start the 5th, and pitched acceptably well, in his first time on the mound as a Major-Leaguer, as Carman could only come up with 1 run in the 5th, as Colin Newby walked, stole second, and eventually scored on a “seeing-eye” blooper. The sixth inning found the score 6-1, but Carman added 4 more in their at bat, on a combination of walks, an error, and 2 hits. Baker batted in the bottom of the sixth, but showed no sign of giving up, as Ricco and Enterlin both put the ball in play, and reached by error to extend the game. Two strikeouts and a fielder’s choice allowed Carman to close out the game, by the final score of 10-1 over the gutsy Inksters. 1 2 3 4 5 6 R H E Carman 0 1 1 3 1 4 10 8 2 Baker 1 0 0 0 0 0 1 3 3
