Majors - 4/16/03: Peterson & Peterson 11, Hagan’s Funeral Home 5 On a perfect evening for baseball, the Peterson team started the game like much of the previous winter weather we have had, cold, damp and dreary. But just as the weather has improved with time so did Peterson. After falling behind Hagan’s 5 to 1 after the second inning, Peterson rallied to win the game with a final score of Peterson 11, Hagan’s 5. The Hagan team started quickly and jumped on Peterson for 3 runs in the 1st inning on leadoff singles by Dan McCarthy and Chris McCusker and a double by Will Torrence, driving in 2 of the 3 1st inning runs. Hagan’s continued scoring in the 2nd inning plating 2 runs, one of the runs scoring on another single by McCusker. It could have been a lot worse for Peterson in 2nd as the inning included 3 walks but Peterson’s pitcher Brad Wenzel threw two runners out trying to steal home on delayed steals. Wenzel settled down in the 3rd inning and retired the side in order. Will Torrence started the game for Hagan’s and pitched 3 strong innings allowing only two hits and one run. Stephen Weathers drove in the only run for Peterson with a clutch two out single in the 2nd inning. The other hit allowed by Torrence was a single by C. J Gamber in the 3rd inning. Peterson warmed up in the 4th inning getting 6 runs on only two hits, a two out bunt single by Jamie Goldsmith followed by a line drive double to left field by Brad Wenzel. Helping Peterson’s cause in the 4th inning were 3 walks and a hit batter. Peterson continued their scoring in the 5th inning getting 4 insurance runs with two outs in the inning, again with only two hits, a bases loaded double to the left center field gap by C. J. Gamber driving in three runs followed by another single by Jamie Goldsmith. Jamie Goldsmith came on to pitch for Peterson in the 4th inning and struck out the side. Hagan’s threatened in the bottom of the 5th inning by getting their leadoff hitter on base. A shoe string catch of a foul pop up by Ryan Luffey down the third base line prevented a possible big inning for Hagan’s as Luffey turned the catch into a double play by getting the runner at 1st base. Sam Williamson followed the double play with a single. However, as the result of the double play, Goldsmith was able to retire the side without any runs scoring. As the sixth inning started, darkness quickly fell on the field and the game had to be halted before the top of the sixth inning was completed with Peterson and Peterson notching their first win of the young season.
