Majors 4/22/03 Carman Insurance 14, Hagans 4 Carman bested Hagans, 14-4, in 5 innings, in a game which was actually two games in one. Kevin Gillen started for Carman, and started off with a K, then allowed a single to right field by Dan McCarthy. Gillen settled in, getting a 1-4 out to erase the lead runner, then a second K, to escape the inning with no runs allowed. In the bottom of the first, Carman's first 9 batters all reached and scored, highlighted by Mike Still's "dinger" to left, on an inside pitch he was able to turn on and power over the fence. In all, Carman sent 15 batters to the plate in the inning, which ended with the score 11-0. End of the first game. Matt Robinson had relieved Will Torrence deep into the first, and again took to the mound for Hagans to start the second. Despite facing 6 batters, and Carman's first three in the lineup, he allowed only 1 run. Dillon Hobson relieved Gillen as Carman's pitcher in the bottom of the second, and also pitched well, allowing only one run as Matt Robinson scored to get Hagans on the board. Robinson retook the mound in the 3rd and 4th, facing the minimum in both innings, getting 2 K's, three ground outs, and a line out. Colin Newby pitched the final 3 innings for Carman, and surrendered 2 runs in the 3rd, Joe Infantino singled and scored, as did Matt Atkinson. Newby put down Hagan's 1-2-3 in the fourth. Matt Atkinson singled and scored again in the fifth, to make the score 12-4. In the home fifth, Carman finally got enough to get the job done, as Gillen drew a leadoff walk, eventually scoring, McGough singled, Still lined out to short, then Boyer singled, Hobson singled, and finally, Scott Kotkamp walked to force in McGough for the final run. After the first, Hagans outscored Carman, 4-3, but the damage had already been done, for a final score of 14-4.
