Majors – 4/23/03 Baker 14 – Moppert 13 Moppert Brothers squared off against Baker Printing in a barnburner of a game. Baker’s Eric Papamarcos would be opposed by Moppert’s Dan Nieves. Baker got on the board in the first inning as Jeremiah Green led off with a single and went to third on a Papamarcos single. Anthony Ricco then brought Green home on a sacrifice fly to center field. Nick Vendetta would then draw a walk and JJ Andrews reached on an E-7. The latter brought 2 more runs across. After Andrews stole a base and reached third, he would score on a Mike Enterlin grounder to the second baseman. Baker was up 4-0. Moppert got on the board in the bottom of the first when Alex Geosits drew a walk, Nick Hetland hit into a fielder’s choice and then stole a base. Forrest Miller’s single plated Hetland and the score was 4-1. This was to be the only run Papamarcos would yield as he pitched three strong innings, striking out six and yielding just 2 hits. Dan Nieves had a 1-2-3 inning in the second. Baker got back on the board in the third scoring 3 runs on a Papmarcos single, a walk to Ricco and after a stolen base, a Nick Vendetta sac fly to right field would bring Eric home. Subsequent doubles by Andrews and Ryan Martin would score Ricco and Andrews. Baker was now up 7-1. In their fourth, Baker led off with a single by Jeremiah Green off Ryan Donovan who was on in relief. After advancing on an Eric Papamarcos ground out, Green would score on a single by Anthony Ricco. A double by Vendetta would then plate Ricco. Baker went up 9-1. Things were about to get interesting as Baker brought in Nick Vendetta to pitch in the bottom of the fourth. After a series of walks and errors, the Moppert boys climbed back into the game. The big blow was a Nick Hetland triple with the bases loaded. Nieves and Andrew Fuerenstein also delivered singles during the rally. Baker brought in Anthony Ricco to put out the fire. By the end of their half inning, Moppert was up by the score of 12-9. But the Baker boys refused to quit. After their lead-off batter popped out, “Big Jon” Burns delivered a clutch single. Ron “Vinegar” Mizelle then followed with a hard hit double to right center scoring Burns. Phil Antonello got on board after being hit by a pitch. After another hit-batsman and two walks, Baker had pushed four runs across. The score was now 13-12 in favor of Baker. Moppert still had another chance in their bottom of the fifth. It was up to Anthony Ricco to close it out and he did so by retiring the side in 1-2-3 order. It was a wild and wooly affair to say the least with both teams making dramatic comebacks. Both starting pitchers did well. Dan Nieves pitched well and notched four strikeouts.
