Majors: 5/3/03 Campbells Boathouse 13, Hagans Funeral Home 10 It wasn't easy and it wasn't pretty but a shorthanded Campbells Boathouse team survived "never say die" 5th and 6th inning rallies by the Hagan's Undertakers to pull out a 7 inning 13-10 win. Campbells was missing 4 starters but got key contributions from Mark Fanelli who tripled and pitched a scoreless 7th for the save, and got standout performances from A-Leaguers Steven McHugh and Connor McCarren. Hagans starter Matt Atkinson got through the 1st 2 innings untouched while his teamates scored 2 in the first off Campbells starter Patrick "Hooch" Smith on 3 BB's and some agressive baserunning. Entering the 3rd inning trailing 2-0, Campbells put up a 5 spot when Mike Caramanico and Alex Butt singled and scored on Brendan "cleanup" McElhenney's double. Mark Fanelli then drove him in with a triple to right center and scored as Steven McHugh reached base on an error. McHugh was then driven in by Conner McCarren's clean single. After "Hooch" Smith pitched a 1-2-3 3rd, Campbells led 5-2. In the 4th Campbells added 4 more runs (after there were 2 outs) on a chain of singles by Butt, McElhenney, Smith, Fanelli, and McHugh and walks to Anthony Tilotta and Patrick Schramm. Then Hagan's got a run in the bottom of the inning to make it Campbells 9, Hagans 3. The drama started in the bottom of the 5th with Campbells holding a 10-3 lead, Hagans halved the deficit when "speedy Joe" Infantino beat out an infield hit, Campbells rolled out 3 errors and Hagans added Dan McCarthy and Chris McCusker singles. When the dust cleared, it was Campbells 10, Hagans 6 but Hagans clearly had some momentum. After Chris McCusker retired Campbells in the 6th, Alex Butt relieved Patrick Smith (5IP, 6K's, 3ER's) and got the 1st batter on a K but Hagans then proceeded to plate 4 runs to tie the score with an Infantino bunt single, an Atkinson single, a couple walks and McCusker and Will Torrence hits that were "thrown around". Although the Campbells Boatboys could have been demoralized, they came right back with a 3 run seventh as McCarren, Butt and McElhenney walks and aggressive baserunning set the stage for Mark Fanelli's masterful 7th inning save, facing only 4 batters. As should be fitting, the last out of the game was cinched by 2B Steve McHugh's (2PO's, 3 assists) sure-handed scoop of a grounder and the game was over. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 R H E Campbells 0 0 5 4 1 0 3 13 11 6 Hagens 2 0 0 1 3 5 0 10 8 2
