Majors: 5/10/03 Campbells Boathouse 7, Baker Print 5 In a hazy drizzling Saturday morning game, 3rd place Campbells closed the gap on 2nd place Baker Print with 7-5 come from behind win. The story was 1 big inning (a 6 run 2nd) for the Boathouse mates and gutsy pitching by "Soup" and "Hooch" (Alex Butt and Patrick Smith) to hold the Baker Boys at bay. Baker jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the 1st off Alex Butt as Jeremiah Green's walk and an Eric Papmarcos infield hit set up Anthony Ricco's 2 RBI single to left center. Ricco then drew a wild throw to later score from 3rd before Butt settled down and got a couple K's. Baker starter Papamarcos then held Campbells scoreless in the 1st. In the second, Baker's Ryan Martin led off with a double to left center but was stranded as the "Soup" got 3 K's battling back from 3-0 counts on two of them. Campbells then had their big 6 run inning. Rob Tull (ever the gamer, playing in pain with a bruised thumb) started things off with a single and was folowed by Brendan McElhenney who drew a base on balls. Ryan "Ry-My" Myers then dropped a twisting pop into right for a single to load the bases. Mark Fanelli walked for an RBI and after a K and second baseman Erich Schabe's robbing snag of a Matt Giardinelli line drive, it looked like Baker might get out of the inning but it was not to be. With 2 out and the bases loaded, Mike Caramanico singled to drive in 2 and "the Sarge" then drove in 2 more with his triple to the wall in right center. Quintans then scored on a pitch that reached the backstop. After Butt and Rob Tull walked, the Baker boys got out of the inning as CF'er Jeremiah Green ran down a McElhenney fly. Baker battled back in the 3rd with a single run as Nick Vendetta, Jonathan Burns and Ryan Martin all singled. With 2 out and the bases loaded, Vendetta scored on a WP but Campbells got the 3rd out as the wild throw to the covering pitcher was backed up by 3B Caramanico who went right back to Butt at the plate to tag the 2nd runner trying to score. Papmarcos then set pitched a scoreless 3rd to bring the game to mid-point with Campbells leading 6-4. The 4th saw Campbells bringing on lefty hurler Patrick Smith and Bakers went to Ryan Martin who both pitched a scoreless 4th with 2 K's each. In the top of the 5th, Baker got to within a run as Vendetta reached base on an error, was moved on Burns' 2nd hit of the game and scored when Ronnie "Vinegar" Mizell's grounder was mishandled. "Hooch" Smith battled through it registering 3 K's to quell the rally. Campbells then got an insurance run in the bottom of the 5th as Butt walked, stole 2nd, was moved to 3rd on "Ry-My" Myers 2nd hit and was driven in by a Patrick Smith single. Never giving up though, the Baker Boys Jeremiah "Bullfrog" Green opened the sixth with a double but Patrick Smith notched his 2nd save of the season K'ing 2 (7K's over 3 IP) and CF'er Matt Giardinelli sealed the game with a steady squeeze of Nick Vendetta's fly ball to center. The win evened Campbells Boathouse's record at 5-5 and they now trail Baker (5-3) by a single game as both will be scrambling down the stretch to catch the Carman Insurance juggernauts. 1 2 3 4 5 6 R H E Baker 3 0 1 0 1 0 5 8 3 Campbells 0 6 0 0 1 x 7 6 5
