Majors: Saturday, May 10, 2003 Carman 13, Peterson 6 Stephen Weathers started at pitcher for Peterson and Peterson, against Kevin Gillen for Carman, in what had the makings of a "David versus Goliath" baseball game. All good Philadelphia sports fans - after years of rooting for the Phillies - had to line up behind the valiant Weathers, and hope this newest David would have the stuff against the Goliath-like Carman Corp team. Carman was visitor, and batted first. Gillen doubled, McGough singled, and Still doubled. 2-0. Matt Snow flew out to left. 1 out. Clifton singled, Andrew Snow singled, Boyer singled, Kotkamp K'd, Coleman walked, then Weathers got the final out on a K. Carman had 6, as they displayed tremendous patience at the plate. Gillen took the mound, as Mehalick singled, Wenzel walked, Gember doubled to deep left, scoring 2, then Goldsmith singled, and Gillen got 2 F-C's and a K to end the inning. Carman 6, Peterson 2. Go David! Weathers faired much better in the second, getting the heart of the Carman order on U4, U1, and U3. But Gillen responded in kind, K-ing all 3 he faced. In the 3rd, Weathers gave up a leadoff single to Clifton, then walked A Snow, followed by a Boyer single. But Weathers retired the next batters, without surrending a run. You go, David! In the bottom of the third, Gillen again K'd all 3 batters. Score still 6-2. Kevin Luffey relieved Weathers, and got 2 quick outs against Carman's 1 and 2 batters, but Still singled, and Matt Snow homered, to make it 8-2. Luffey retired the next batter on a liner back to the mound. 8-2. Scattolini singled to start the home 4th, followed by a walk to Gorbey. Then Gillen got a double play play on a 1-5-4, as McGough tagged out the runner coming from first who had overrun second. A 4-6 groundout ended the inning. Nice middle infield play by Carman. Carman added to their lead in the top of the 5th, as Andrew Snow hammered a 2-strike leadoff homer. Boyer followed with a triple. The next two batters K'd and popped to first. Then Gillen dropped a sweet drag bunt, and scored on an overthrow of first and an ensuing errant throw from there. Carman 11, Peterson 2. In the bottom of the 5th, Peterson again roared, scoring 4 of their own, as Buttery singled, Wenzel walked, Gamber singled, followed by Jamie Goldsmith's "dinger" to right. Gillen settled down, K-ing the next 2 batters, and David, pardon me, Peterson, got themselves back into the game, with a score of 11-6. Carman again drew blood in the top 6, as M Snow singled, Boyer singled, and Tierney doubled, to go up 13-6. Bottom of the 6th, Gillen again on the mound, to try to book the win, and survived 2 E's, while ringing up 3 more K's, for a final score of 13-6. For died-in-the-wool Philadelphia fans, this had a familiar ending to it, as Goliath survived everything David had slung. David was none-the-less-valiant for the effort, and, in truth, probably put the biggest scare into the Carman-folk they have seen this season. This marked the first 3-homer game of the season in MLL, as both Snows went yard, as did Peterson's Goldsmith. Although Gillen struggled at times, he fanned every Peterson batter at least once (ending the game with 13 K's.) Boyer broke out with a 4-4 outing, with a triple and 3 runs scored.
