Majors: 5/27/03 and 6/2/03 Campbells 11, Peterson 9 This game had it all folks as Campbells Boathouse squared off with Peterson and Peterson on May 27 in a battle for 3rd place. - We had threatening weather - we had brother vs. brother (the Quintans' Sarge vs. Corporal) - we had a close game early - we had Campbells with a 6 run lead - We had a Rob Tull homer to center - we had Peterson fighting back to tie it in the 5th - we had Campbells change pitchers with bases loaded and 2 out to keep it tied - we had the game suspended tied 9-9 after 5 innings ..... whew ....... and the Boathouse pulled out a 11-9 win when the resumed game. The game started innocently enough as Peterson's C.J. Gamber put away Campbells in the 1st and Campbells starter Patrick "Hooch" Smith 1-2-3'ed the Petersons. In the 2nd, Gamber struck out the side and Peterson put up a run in the home half as Jamie Goldsmith's deep drive to left was dropped and she was driven in by "Gentle" Ben Hartzell. Ryan Luffey also followed with a single but Smith held off further damage by getting 3 ground balls and Campbells infield held that runner on each. The Boat "people" finally got on the board with 3 in the top of the 3rd as leadoff hitter "RyMy" Myers doubled, stole 3rd and was driven in by Mike Caramanico. After a Gamber got a K, Rob Tull doubled in Mikey C., was held at 3rd on a Sarge Quinatans single, but tug up and scored on an Alex Butt sac-fly to center. Peterson then tied the score at 3-3 in the bottom of the 3rd after Brian Mehalick's bunt single, C.J. Gamber reached on a FC and Hartzell got 2 more RBI's on a single. The Campbells kids looked like they would blow it open in the 4th when they posted 6 runs. Singles by Patrick Schramm, "RyMy" and Mark Fanelli set up Matt Giardinelli's 2 run triple. That was followed by Rob Tull's 2 run "never a doubt" blast over the centerfield wall. The Sarge reached on an E-6, and was driven in by Brendan "B-Mac" McElhenney's single. The Peterson team never gave up though and got 3 back in the bottom of the inning on 2 walks and 3 errors. End of 4, Campbells led 9-6. After Ryan Luffey held Campbells scoreless in the 5th, the rallying Peterson Blacks rallied some more against Campbells reliever Mark Fanelli. Fanelli got Luffey on a P-6, but Matt Gorbey-Fritsch walked, Jackson Buttery was HBP, then Fanelli K'ed the Nick "Corporal" Quintans for the 2nd out but Brian Mehalick walked to load the bases to get the Campbells fans in a cold sweat. Brad Wenzel then singled to make it 6-4 (bases still loaded). CJ Gamber walked to make it 6-5 (bases still loaded) and Goldsmith walked to tie it at 6-6 (bases still loaded). Bob "Skipper" Tull then called on Alex Butt in the pressure cooker to face Ben (already 2-3) Hartzell and the "Soup" got Hartzell looking to end the 5th with the score tied 9-9. Umpire Terry Dotts then suspended the game for drizzle and darkness with the game to be resumed on 6/2. As the sixth inning resumed 6 days later, Peterson went with Jamie Goldsmith on the mound and with one out walked "Sarge" Quintans and Alex Butt. This set the stage as "B-Mac" McElhenney (who was 3-4 with a double) singled to drive in Quintans and Butt scored on a WP. McElhenney's hit turned out to be the game winning RBI as "Soup" Butt closed things out for the win and assured Campbells their 8-7 season and the season series 2-1 over Peterson. 1 2 3 4 5 6 R H E Campbells 0 0 3 6 0 2 11 14 4 Peterson 0 1 2 3 3 0 9 6 2
