National League - April 22, 2003 Reds 11 Royals 7 Strong pitching and timely hitting got the Reds' season off on the right foot with an 11 to 7 win against a very determined Royals team. Eric McGough pitched a strong first two innings for the Reds striking out six with only one walk and one hit. Kyle Maylish lead off the offense and the season in fine fashion hitting is way on and coming around to score. Other players who had a good day at the bat included Dusty Kotcamp with a 3 base shot in the second inning, Greg Snow going 2-2 and Eric McGough with a 2 run triple and a 3 run home run. The Reds jumped out early on the Royals going up 7-1 after 2 innings, but the Royals exploded for 6 runs in the 3rd inning making it a tie ballgame. The Royals offensive explosion was sparked by a lead off walk to Bobby Van Leer and an RBI producing single by Cole Gamber. Other Royals who played very well included Alexis Corner going 1-1 with an RBI and Hunter Tierney who pitched a strong 2 1/3 innings. The defensive play of the game saw Reds pitcher Greg Snow field a hot shot up the middle off the bat of Luke Antonello and gun it home to Donovon Jackson who made a game saving textbook tag for the out.
