National League: April 27, 2003 Gardner Fox Reds 11, Granite Run Pontiac Marlins 8 The Reds are red hot out of the gate for the 2003 season. The second game of the season can truly be viewed as a team effort as the Reds got offensive production up and down the lineup. Eric McGough started the game on the mound. After a shaky start he settled in and pitched three strong innings giving up only 3 hits and 2 runs. Although the Reds defense was stingy, their offense was plentiful. Kyle Maylish continues to exemplify what a lead off hitter should be. He had a perfect on base percentage and his day at the plate included a double and a solo dinger! The key to this victory, however, was hits and RBIs from the bottom half of the lineup. Zack Kline had a perfect on base percentage and an RBI. Grant Jamgachian was 1-1 with a sacrifice and 2 RBIs. Dougger Lisk picked up an RBI batting in the 8 hole and JB Betz also chipped in with an RBI. Avery Roller had a big bounce back game with a perfect on base percentage, 2 RBIs and a blast into right-center field. The Marlins, however, did not fold under the pressure and rallied to score 6 runs over the final 2 innings. Leading the offensive charge for the Marlins were Billy Ankrum with a single in the 3rd, Darren Lucca going 3-3 with 2 RBIs and Andy Kaiden picking up a pair of RBIs. Also playing well for the Marlins was Brian Vendetta coming in and pitching 2 strong innings yielding only 2 hits. Phillip "Dusty" Kotcamp closed the game for the Reds on the mound. Dusty's debut on the mound saw him strike out 3 batters and give up only 4 hits over 2 innings. Playing strong defensively behind Dusty were Eric McGough fielding a well hit ball at short and tagging out the lead runner, and Greg Snow making a defensive put out from the catcher's position gunning down a would be Marlin's base stealer. However, the defensive play of the game had to be when a ball hit sharply towards right-center field was snagged by Reds 2nd baseman JB Betz and flipped to the shortstop for a heads up put out on the lead runner for the 3rd and final out of the game.
