National Playoffs: June 10, 2003 Gardner Fox Reds 17, Caramanico Braves 6 The Gardner Fox Reds started their play-off run with a 17-6 victory over the Caramanico Braves. Kyle Maylish started on the mound for the Reds and pitched three strong innings, giving up only three hits and striking out 5. The Reds didn't have to rely on good pitching alone to keep the Braves offense in check. The Reds played strong defense highlighted by Kyle Maylish fielding a ground ball from the pitcher's position and flipping it to Greg Snow at home for a force out and the third out of the second inning. The defensive highlight of the game, however, came in the third inning as the Braves were threatening with men in scoring position, Ryan Bradley hit a humpback liner that Eric McGough snared over his shoulder on the run at shortstop and turned and fired to Zack Kline at 3rd who smartly stepped on the bag for the 6-5 double play. The Reds offense got off to a sluggish start in the first inning until Philip "Dusty" Kotcamp came up to the plate. Dusty started the play-offs with a red hot stick and went 4-4 on the game with three doubles, a single and a team leading 4 RBIs in the game. Eric McGough also hit well in the game going 3-5 with three runs scored and 2 RBIs. By the second inning, however, the Reds looked like their old selves as they were hitting pretty much throughout the lineup highlighted by Avery Roller's RBI producing double in the third inning and JB Betz' single in the second inning. The Caramanico Braves got their bats heated up in the third inning when Jesse Tull lead off with a single, followed by a Jimmy Allen single and Andrew Karkenny hitting a double. In the 4th inning, Eric McGough came in at pitcher to close the game. In three innings of work, he allowed 2 hits and struck out 9. The Reds continue the play-offs on Saturday, June 14th.
