In the season opener, the Mariners defeated the Diamondbacks, 7-6. The Mariners
jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the third. The game was 6-4 heading
into the sixth. The Diamondbacks scored two to tie the game. In the bottom of
the sixth, Jeremy Cohen tripled to drive in the winning run.
For the Diamondbacks: At the plate, Kelton Brunner (game-tying, two-run HR in
the top of the sixth; three RBI; two runs scored), Luke Mersch (two-run double,
run scored), Nicholas Corritore (triple, two runs scored) and Jake McDowell
tallied two hits apiece, while Brunner, Joey Cornacchia and Milan Hortua all
made exceptional plays in the field.
After trailing, 5-0, the D'backs rallied for four runs with two outs in the top
of the fourth to cut it to 5-4. In that inning, after the first two batters got
out, Corritore, Brunner, Cornacchia, Mersch, McDowell and Nico Villalobos strung
together six straight hits, including a triple by Corritore, a double by
Cornacchia and a two-run double by Mersch.
In the top of the fifth, Hortua, Blayke Reid and Dylan LeBuhn got three
consecutive hits to load the bases with nobody out, but the Mariners got out of
the jam without giving up a run.
After the Mariners added a run to make it 6-4, the Diamondbacks went into the
top of the sixth needing two runs to tie. With one out, Corritore got a clutch
hit, and then Brunner crushed a two-run homer to tie the game at 6-6.
The Mariners scored in the bottom of the sixth to win the game.
Overall, it was a good game by both teams.
