The Fine Art Of Sport Statistics

Games Behind (GB)
Statistics can be useful in calculating the number of games a team is
behind the first place team. Ties are not included in the
calculation of Games Behind.
If the Reds have won 15 games and lost 4 games and the Blues have won 9
games and lost 10 games we would have: Then the Browns are 6.5 games behind the Reds.
Standings / Average / Win Average / Pct The standings are calculated to the nearest thousandth to determine the Win Average (AVE) or winning percentage. Each Tie a team has counts as a .5 win.
Seedings Seedings are based on Standings after the last regular season game has been played.
Tie breakers are decided by: 1. Head to Head results. The results of the two (or three) teams are reviewed and the team with the best record will be placed in the better seed position. 2. If the Head to Head results are the same or not enough games have been played against each other: Compare Runs Given Up ("Runs Against"). The lower the points the better, so the team with the lower runs given up will be placed in the better seed position. 3. If there is not a clear winner with Runs Given Up: Head to Head with the First Seed team. The results of each of the tied teams against the first seed are reviewed and the team with the best record will be placed in the better seed position. If this is the same, move to Second seed, Third, until one of the teams wins.
